How to Navigate Yosemite Wilderness Permits
Yosemite wilderness permits are required for all overnight stays in the Yosemite Wilderness. Most popular trailheads use a quota system with advance reservations released through Recreation.gov. For those lucky enough to secure a permit, the reward is access to some of the most iconic high-country terrain in the Sierra Nevada.
The Lottery and Release System Explained
Each year, demand far exceeds supply for the most popular trailheads. Yosemite uses a rolling release schedule where 60% of permits become available 24 weeks in advance at 7:00 AM Pacific. The remaining 40% are held for walk-up distribution starting at 11:00 AM the day before your entry date.
It is critical to select your entry dates carefully. Mid-week starts significantly increase your odds compared to Friday or Saturday departures, and having alternate trailheads ready is essential since quotas vary by entry point.
Alternative Entry Points
While Little Yosemite Valley and Cathedral Lakes draw the most attention, other trailheads like Tuolumne Meadows, Hetch Hetchy, and Glacier Point Road offer stunning wilderness experiences with different availability profiles. Remember that you must camp in the zone specified on your permit for the duration of your trip.
